1987

FROM ITALY WITH LOVE

The $75,000 Virginia Slims of San Diego found a new home in 1987 at the San Diego Tennis & Racquet Club, a 26-court club in the San Diego community of Bay Park. The draw was increased to 56 players and no qualifying competition was held.

In the final, Italy's Raffaella Reggi won the first seven games and cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 victory over unseeded Anne Minter of Australia in 68 minutes before a capacity crowd of 1,248.

Reggi, ranked 20 in the world, won 33 of the first 50 points in the match and broke Minter's serve seven times on her way to claiming the winner's check for $15,000.

The 21-year-old Italian delighted the crowds all week long with her variety of facial expressions and a fiery on court demeanor. During her matches, she could he heard yelling, Dai! (Come on!).

Minter, who upset top-seeded Lori McNeil in the semifinals, earned $6,700 for her effort. She came into the tournament ranked 60 in the world.

Following her victory, Reggi telephoned her parents in Faenza, Italy where it was 1 a.m. She later celebrated her title with a strawberry daiquiri.

Reggi, the number one player in Italy, routed unseeded countrywoman, Laura Garrone, 6-0, 6-0 in an early round match.

Czechoslovakia's Jana Novotna and Catherine Suire of France won the doubles title with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Elise Burgin and Sharon Walsh-Pete of the United States.
