Pierce Wins All-French Match Up

The French flag waived proudly on Thursday night at the La Costa Resort and Spa as Mary Pierce and Nathalie Dechy of France met in a third-round Acura Classic match.

The sixth-seeded Pierce eliminated Dechy, her French Fed Cup teammate, 7-5, 6-3, in the featured night session match on Stadium Court.

In a tight first set, Pierce saved her best game for last as she led 6-5 with Dechy serving to stay in the set. Pierce, who had her forehand working all night, broke at love to win the set.

The second set was just as close as Pierce broke Dechy, who was seeded 10th, at love to take a 4-3 lead.

That was all Pierce needed as she held serve the rest of the set. Serving for the match at 5-3, Pierce impressively served the match out a love as she earned her first and only match point of the night with a service ace.

The most significant statistic of the match for both players was Break Points Saved. Pierce saved six of seven break points held against her while Dechy failed to save any of the three break points Pierce held against her serve.

• Pierce advances to the quarterfinals where she will play Patty Schnyder of Switzerland.
• Pierce is ranked 14 in the world.
• Pierce is making her ninth Acura Classic appearance.
• Pierce now leads Dechy 4-0 in career head-to-head meetings.
