Martina Hingis Enters 2007 Acura Classic

-- Two-Time Acura Classic Champion Returns to San Diego --

SAN DIEGO, CA, May 14, 2007 – Promotion Sports, Inc. today announced that Martina Hingis has entered the 2007 Acura Classic, to be held July 28 - August 5 at the La Costa Resort & Spa. The Swiss star will be making her seventh San Diego appearance. She has won here twice, first in 1997 when she defeated Monica Seles to earn the singles title, and then again in 1999 when she beat Venus Williams in the final. She also won the Acura Classic doubles crown in 1997.

Hingis made a much-heralded comeback last year after a three-year hiatus, winning two Tour singles titles and returning to the top 10. Currently ranked #6 in the world, her professional career began in 1994 when she was just 14 years old. Two years later she became the youngest player in history to be ranked #1. She spent a total of 209 non-consecutive weeks in the top-ranked position, making her fourth on the all-time list. She has won a total of five Grand Slam singles titles in her career as well as nine Grand Slam doubles titles. She reached seven additional Grand Slam singles finals, twice won the season-ending championships in singles and doubles and boasts a career tally of 43 singles tournament wins.

Noted Promotion Sports’ Raquel Giscafré: “With her strategic and crafty style, Martina has always been a very exciting player to watch. Now, in this second phase of her career, she has added a new element to the intensity of her game – the obvious joy that she brings to her playing. It is truly a thrill to watch her continue to evolve as both a player and a person, and we couldn’t be happier that she is coming back this year.”

With this announcement, the 2007 Acura Classic field will now include three former San Diego champions (all current or former #1 players), including both Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova in addition to Hingis.

Now in its 24th year, the Acura Classic is one of the premier events on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour and one of the largest women’s tennis tournaments in the world. Past winners include Mary Pierce, Lindsay Davenport, Venus Williams, Martina Hingis, Steffi Graf and Jennifer Capriati.
