-- First of Three Opportunity Tournaments Takes Place This Week in
Pacific Palisades; Winner of Each Event to Receive Wild Card Entry
into Acura Classic Qualifying Draw --
SAN DIEGO, CA, June 26, 2007 – Attention local tennis fans: Here’s an opportunity to enjoy some fast-paced competition – and maybe even catch a rising star! The 2007 Acura Classic, to be held July 28 - August 5 at the La Costa Resort & Spa, kicked off the first of its three annual “Opportunity Tournaments” this week at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades (June 25-30). The Opportunity Tournaments are open to talented local players and qualified lower-ranked or unranked players. The winner of each event will receive a “Wild Card” entry into the 2007 Acura Classic’s Qualifying Draw, where she’ll have a chance to potentially match skills against some of the world’s top professionals.
This year’s two other Acura Classic Opportunity Tournaments will take place in San Clemente at the Rancho San Clemente Tennis & Fitness Club (July 11-14), and San Diego at the San Diego Tennis & Racquet Club (July 18-22). Players interested in competing may visit www.acuraclassic.com for entry forms and more information. (See full Opportunity Tournament Schedule below.)
Jane Stratton of Promotion Sports, Inc., notes that the Acura Classic’s tradition of opening up its qualifying rounds to Opportunity Tournament winners is appreciated by players and fans alike. Says Stratton: “It gives us a great sense of satisfaction to be able to provide players who may be less experienced with a chance to test their mettle against the many top players at the Acura Classic, and our fans love the chance to come and cheer for the up-and-comers.”
Former Opportunity Tournament winners include local favorites Alexandra Stevenson and Angelica Gavaldon. Last year’s winners were Celia Durkin, Hilary Barte and Amanda Fink.
Draw size for each Opportunity Tournament will be limited to 32 players. Acceptances will be made according to WTA TOUR ranking, college record, and/or junior record. Each Opportunity Tournament requires a $35 entry fee.
